Platforms in environmentally beautiful or film featured locations- difficult to discover due to how they are virtually identical to all other platforms in the game. Finding these perches can be tricky. When the player's dragon lands on such a perch, the dragon hangar will not open up as usual- instead the perch simply features a view sequence where the player can see their chosen character/dragon sat on the perch, saying something to eachother.

The Golden Terror is a unique non ridable dragon that begins to appear after the player completes the second or third dragon tournament. In order to find this dragon players can check the game map where, if spawned, a golden Terror symbol will appear on their map. However, the Golden Terror is extremely fast and agile, which can lead to a long and possibly frustrating chase. If the player looses the Terror they must wait before another appears somewhere else on the map.

The How To Train Your Dragon 2 video game is based on the DreamWorks movie by the same name that was launched in June 2014. Oddly enough this game was released even before the movie it is based on premiered locally. Just like the movie, the game is full of fantasy, adventure, action, and, of course, dragons. It launched simultaneously for the Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation3, Xbox 360, Wii, and Wii U.

School of Dragons game PC missions and quests

The game has different challenges, but most of them are quite simple and fun. Some Challenges revolve around picking up each dragon's tokens, learning to land, flame-throwing, long flying times without crashing with the obstacles, and much more. Of course, some of these challenges will be really useful when you take part in the tournaments, so be sure to complete as many as you can.

In the tournaments, you will compete against the other riders for the title of the best rider on the island. But these are not just friendly competitions, as you can attack the other riders, throw objects at them and defeat them. Overcome all your challengers and even ride their dragons. The more you win, the more titles you get, this will allow you to unlock new items, abilities, and even characters.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 is a light and casual game, simple and entertaining. The tournaments, with all the obstacles and competitors, are similar to the races you'd see in Mario Kart 64. And the training is just some basic mini-games. But the game really falls short by not being multiplayer in any way. This immediately takes points away, especially when you compare it to similar titles.

Book of Dragons is an 18-minute[33] short film, based on How to Train Your Dragon, and was released on November 15, 2011, on DVD and Blu-ray, along with Gift of the Night Fury. The short shows Hiccup, Astrid, Fishlegs, Toothless and Gobber telling the legend behind the Book of Dragons and revealing insider training secrets about new, never before seen dragons. The short shows a total of 14 different dragons, each separated into 7 classes: Stoker (Terrible Terror, Monstrous Nightmare), Boulder (Gronckle, Whispering Death), Fear (Hideous Zippleback, Snaptrapper), Sharp (Deadly Nadder, Timberjack), Tidal (Scauldron, Thunderdrum), Mystery (Changewing, Boneknapper) and Strike (Skrill, Night Fury).[34]

The flight-focused third-person gameplay with accessible controls brings to mind the wondrous Star Wars: Rogue Squadron series by defunct developer Factor 5 (a studio doomed, ironically, by its disastrous dragon-flying title Lair); the core gameplay revolves around simply steering your dragon with the left control stick and launching fireballs with ZR. You can accelerate, decelerate, make sharp turns and use special attacks, but the core controls are easy to understand; the GamePad and TV always show the same action, which allows for off-TV play. The camera controlled by the right control stick gets incredibly wonky at times, but overall the controls feel fluid.

Once the wonder of flying around the island wears off, though, How to Train Your Dragon 2 doesn't have much to offer. Most of the events (which you can luckily quit out of at any time) are variations of "race the other dragons," "fly through floating rings like in Superman 64", or "race the other dragons and fly through floating rings like in Superman 64." While flying lackadaisically around the huge world is fun, the racing minigames lack the nuance and depth of a dedicated racing title; as far as the ring collecting goes, it's about as fun as it sounds. Any time you brush up against a wall, your character falls off their dragon and must respawn again. To change the pace a bit there's a touch screen shooting gallery minigame, which took this reviewer a while to figure out because it doesn't tell you to use the touch screen and none of the rest of the game uses touch controls at all. There's also a sheep-collecting challenge where you're required to put red sheep in the red enclosure and blue sheep in the blue enclosure, but when playing we often found invisible sheep that made it a nearly-broken experience.

If you're a big fan of the movie and you can take advantage of the multiplayer with your kids, the exploration aspect of How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a soothing, enjoyable romp through a detailed island gameworld accompanied by a triumphant soundtrack. As a retail game, though, it's a steep asking price for a dragon adventure with repetitive minigames and little depth. Hopefully these building blocks will lead to fuller results once How to Train Your Dragon 3 rolls around.

I really don't at all understand how this is called "How to Train Your Dragon 2" yet it sounds like it has nothing at all whatsoever to do w/ the movie. I'm not really expecting a good movie licensed game, but having just saw the movie yesterday there is a lot of potential for a videogame in there, exploring new islands - Berk is hardly even in it the movie - 2 giant dragons, tons and tons of bad guys to torch. If they want to come out w/ a crappy game called "Dragons: Explorers of Berk Island" thats all fine and good, but this really sounds like somebody should be sued for false advertising. I'm serious. The movie was so good I was considering getting the game for my kids. Now I really hope they make a "Lego Dreamworks Dragons" game, b/c this sounds like a free web game. Criminal.

I?ll admit I went into this game completely blind. I hadn?t seen a single piece of information prior to playing it. I knew it was based off the movie, and I expected maybe a platform style game or maybe something akin to Skylanders. For a brief moment after starting the game and flying on the back of a dragon I hoped that maybe the game was a free roaming shooter or maybe one on rails like Panzer Dragoon. Instead the game devolves quickly into missions that have you flying the dragon through rings (not unlike Pilotwings or the aforementioned Superman 64). This wouldn?t be so bad if the game had decent controls. One of the missions had me fly my dragon straight at a mountain, and then fly up the mountain. Unfortunately the hit detection was off and even though I was clearly quite a distance away from the rocks on the mountain, the camera insisted on going all over the place, making flying straight near impossible. I kept hitting invisible walls that would turn my dragon back or mess with the camera angle. If flying through rings isn?t your thing, you can do dragon races, which has you flying around a track while spitting out projectiles at your competitors. Other little games abound, like one where you fly down and collect different colored animals and return them to their respective pens. The more you can collect in a given time the higher your rank. You can also fly around the island in free roam and find hidden little trinkets that can unlock goodies. These will differ depending on the dragon and riders you choose to play as.
